The Lilacs in the Glass

Growing up, I would always look forward to the days when the lilac bushes would be in bloom. The days would be warmer, welcoming summer. The mama cats would bring their kittens to the hedge- the hedge of lilacs, and let them play.  Mom and I would spend what seemed like hours to me watching the kittens playing in the shade of the lilacs. Time seemed to stand still at those times, yet it went so fast. Every year I would break off some lilacs from the bush and put them in a glass to bring into the house on the farm where I grew up. Such delicate little flowers with a beautiful scent of summer.

The other day we had a south-east wind - just enough of a breeze to blow the scent of the lilacs to the house. Our mama cats don't bring their kittens to the bush  though, but some of our little farm kittens are buried close to the lilacs.

The sun is shining warmly now; the breeze is still blowing the scent of the lilacs up to the house.  And today I couldn't resist.  I cut a few sprigs of lilacs and put them in a glass and set them in a window in the house on the farm where I now live. The summer season has now been welcomed into our home.
