Hatching a Plan

On a beautiful spring day in May 1976, a group of grade 6 girls huddled in a corner in the school gymnasium, between the grad exercises and the dance, hatching a plan.  My brother, the brother who is coming today from Ontario with his daughter, granddaughter and special friend, graduated from high school that evening.  He was striking in his light blue, suede-look leisure suit, longish hair, and big glasses.  Handsome, in fact,  to his younger, impressionable sister.

This sister of his-me , sitting with Patti, Lana, Elaine, Vanessa, Wendy and Rhonda, was scheming.  We all decided then we would join forces and be in training together - Monday morning was when the training would begin. We all had the necessary training gear anyway!

So on a Monday morning in the Hazlet Elementary School, the 7 grade 6 girls became a sister-hood, complete with our training bras. I don't recall that any of us really needed them then, but by golly, we weren't going to let the boys tease just one of us. And our scheming worked.

Eventually through the school years most of us still needed them. But now, 35 years later, my 'training' is at an end. I will be bidding an 'adieu' to the 'girls' the same time I will be bidding 'adieu' to my handsome, blue-suede brother. My Sweetheart and I will be heading to the big city on Tuesday for my Wednesday surgery.

I couldn't be more excited!  Good bye back pain!  Good bye clothes that don't fit!   Good bye girls!!
